In Memory of Pastor Stephen J. Eriksen

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Pastor Emeritus Stephen J. Eriksen, who died on Monday, October 21, 2024. Pastor Steve served Shalom United Church of Christ in Richland for over 22 remarkable years, becoming a beloved spiritual leader and a cherished figure in both the church and broader community. His ministry was distinguished by an unwavering commitment to social justice, compassion, and interfaith outreach, fostering deep connections with people of diverse backgrounds, including the Muslim, Jewish, and Buddhist communities.

Throughout his years at Shalom, Pastor Steve hosted events that shaped the heart of the congregation and community—from peace marches to interfaith potlucks. His vision and efforts also led to the expansion of Shalom's facilities, providing the congregation with new ways to serve the community and share in meaningful experiences.

Pastor Steve’s sermons resonated with his commitment to justice and pastoral care, often reflecting the wisdom and insights of his church family. His intellectual and compassionate approach to ministry was rooted in his theological training, beginning with a master of divinity degree from Earlham School of Religion in 1988. Pursuing studies at United Seminary, he found alignment with the United Church of Christ's values, ultimately shaping his calling and long devotion to Shalom United Church of Christ.

Pastor Steve retired from active ministry on December 31, 2020, and was named Pastor Emeritus on December 4, 2022, a title that reflected the congregation’s deep appreciation for his decades of guidance and care.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at Shalom United Church of Christ. All who were touched by Pastor Steve’s ministry are invited to join as we honor the life and legacy of a remarkable spiritual leader, friend, and community advocate.
