When you walk through our doors, you will be greeted and invited to sign our guest book. In our large gathering space, get to know others in the Shalom community. You’ll find individuals from various backgrounds, from numerous denominations, and those searching for spiritual meaning. You’ll meet some who have been members for years, others who are new to Shalom, some regular attenders, others who attend occasionally, and you’ll find a range of attire from casual to dressy. You are welcome here.
In worship, particularly in hymns and music, we sometimes encounter language that reflects outdated ideas or assumptions, such as assigning gender to the Divine, limiting roles by gender or class, or promoting nationalism, militarism, and racism. We approach these challenges thoughtfully and in various ways. Occasionally, we adapt the words of beloved hymns or familiar texts to align with more inclusive ways of understanding. While these revisions may feel unfamiliar or even jarring at first they reflect Shalom's commitment to inclusivity and justice. At times, however, we may also present traditional texts or songs in their original form, recognizing their historical context while acknowledging their limitations.
This journey of reflection and adaptation is ongoing. Just as we honor the faithful efforts of those who came before us, we hope future generations will build upon and honor our best efforts to express love, justice, and inclusivity.
Communion is celebrated on the first Sunday of the month. No matter where you are in your life’s journey, you are welcome to participate in communion. At the communion table, gluten-free and dairy-free bread and grape juice are offered. Participants may come forward to take a piece of the bread, dip it into the juice cup, and partake. If for any reason, a participant would prefer to remain in their seat for communion, the bread and juice will be brought to them.
Get yourself a cup of coffee or tea and join us for conversation in the Narthex. Treats are donated by congregants. If you would like to donate treats, drop them off in the kitchen before the service.
Feedback Circle is offered on many Sundays for worship participants to discuss the worship service, the sermon message, or other relevant topics. This open forum gathers during the coffee hour and concludes at 12 noon. All are welcome to participate.
